Happiness in the Balance

"Happiness is not a matter of intensity but of balance, order, rhythm and harmony." - Thomas Merton.

A lot of people think that you can force yourself to be happy but all that intensity promotes great disappointment when you realize that despite your best efforts you are still unhappy. From now on, resolve to create balance, order, rhythm and harmony in your life and you will automatically be happy. There are 5 methods to create happiness and an overall lifestyle balance. Here they are:

1. Physical
There are 5 things you need to do to reach your pinnacle of physical wellness.
a) Exercise – 30 minutes a day is enough but moving actively promotes the productions of endorphins or “feel good” hormones that help reduce your stress level and makes you happy.
b) Get enough rest – your body needs 8 hours to completely repair itself. However, you may modify this amount based on your lifestyle, just aim for at least 6hours of sleep – your energy levels will skyrocket.
c) Eat well – eat your way to happiness by not giving in to those cravings but instead find beautiful balance with what is on your plate. The healthy plate below is a great depiction of how your plate should look at every meal.

d) Find time to relax – find a quiet space, lie down, place your hands at your sides, uncross your legs and think of nothing. Let all your thoughts seep out of your body and breathe slowly. This is a popular practice in yoga that completely relaxes the mind and body and immediately refreshes the individual. Personal relaxation time improves your mood dramatically.
e) Find a hobby that you enjoy – crosswords, stamp collecting, reading, or just about any activity that gets you to your happy place and keeps you there.

2. Mental
Create better mental zen with these 4 tips
a) Plan out your day and set goals. By being proactive you can take better control of your day and better manage the tasks that you have to do. Although everything may not be accomplished at least you are able to prioritize and know which project you need to be working on.
b) Write but keep it positive. Keeping a diary or journal is one effective method of keeping your negativity and unhappiness in check. In writing about your feelings you can express your feelings and thus be able to deal with your problems more objectively. Always remember to end your diary/journal entry on a positive note as this is integral to improving your mood. In addition, the end to your entry may include an action plan as to how you can resolve your problem
c) Find out and develop your talents. What are you good at? You need to find that out and develop it.Knowing our potential helps us to be more confident in our abilities and who we are as individuals.
d) Try to set goals that are reasonable to achieve. It ok to dream big, but failure to accomplish our dreams will result in us becoming discouraged, disappointed or even de-motivated. For those big dreams, break them up into smaller, more realistic dreams – as you accomplish each smaller, more realistic dream you will find that you enjoy the journey a lot more.

3. Spiritual
The mind, body and spirit all contribute to our overall happiness. Exercise these 2 basic things to promote spiritual wellness
a) Pray effectively or meditate. If you are spiritual then you know just how much prayer and meditation help us to understand life better. Finding that quiet space and speaking to that higher being, puts all things in perspective and allows us to be grateful for what we have and be content.
b) Communicate with nature. Go outside. Go to the park or garden and be
one with sight, smell and feel of nature.

4. Social & Emotional
a) Do a good deed for other people. It might seem strange but doing good for others benefits more than it actually benefits the person on the receiving end.
b) Cooperate with other people that you meet.
c) Listen to other people. There is difference between just hearing the words and actually paying attention and listening to them.
d) Synergize mutually advantageous compatibility of elements, resources or efforts

5. Material
a) Get a good education. To get a good self-supporting job, master the skills necessary for your advancement. That way you will not be dependent upon anyone else.
b) The job has to be the one you love. "Love it or leave it."
c) Money is not that important. Happiness is the most important thing.
